What happened to following / followers?

Monday, December 17th, 2007

I rediscovered, possibly the first blog entry about Seesmic. It is dated October 8th and it is a techcrunch post. I rescacnned it, there are some interesting things to note, but what I want in mention in this post, is something that doesn’t exist as of now.

The Following / Followers section.

Do you see it in the bottom right section? Two buttons. A following button, and a followers button. Earlier today (or was it late last night?) I saw that Loic Twittered that friends functionality is coming.

Which leads me to a soapbox rant I recently had. With friends, I hope rights management is soon to follow. It is also important to note what commenter Steve Rhode said:

Being open is good but being open with user controls and permission is even better. For now on Seesmic, I’ll probably be a lurker but not a poster.

I hope Seesmic takes that to heart, and builds this as quickly as possible. Steve is being true to his word, and I have not seen a video since he posted this. He may just be posting less often, but that is significant. Viva rights management!

Any new startup you think deserves recognition? Visit the Crunchies?

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

There is a new awards show. Suspiciously close in time and name to The Winnies, the unfortunately named Crunchies are taking nominations.

Here is what the Crunchies are in the words of one of the creators, Read/Write Web:

“…the competition and award ceremony to recognize and celebrate the most compelling startups, internet and technology innovations of the year.

“We’re aiming to recognize things that are important to startups - web innovation, best bootstrapping, best use of viral marketing, and so on. There are also product type categories - e.g. mobile, video.”

So if you happen to know of a company that you think is worth nominating/voting on, head on over there and choose from categories like, ‘Best Overall’, ‘Best start-up CEO’, ‘Best video site’, ‘Best user-generated content site’, ‘Best technology innovation / achievement’, etc. Plenty of categories to choose from. You have until Wednesday, December 12th. Then it will be time to vote on the finalists. But don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted.
