SeesmicCafe DC videos by NewMediaJim

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

A collection of videos I found very interesting done by NewMediaJim at the Lotus Lounge apparently at a benefit to raise money for the One Laptop Per Child initiative. Those non-profits sure know how to party :-)
There are so many videos, I would fill up the page by posting them all in the browser, so I’m just going to give you the standalone link. Also did my best to hear who is in each video. If you have better information or a keener ear then I do, please leave a comment and I’ll update the post.

Intro - Technoliday party
#1 - NewMediaJim and old friend :) #2 - Justin Thorp
#3 - Viewpoint about learning
#4 - ??? & Ryan
#5 - Greater DC Cares
#6 - Charlotte & NewMediaJim
#7 - Laura Cotton & NewMediaJim
#8 - Toni Lynn (craftynation.com)
#9 - One Laptop per child
#10 - Victoria

And I found this too by the Seesmic crew: Congratulations WASHINGTON!!!!

Clearly there is more to this Seesmic Cafe then meets the eye. There is also a Facebook group for Seesmic Cafe, with Jim Long (NewMediaJim) as an officer. Something to keep an eye on for sure.

David Jacob’s Seesmic Widget

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

Not sure how much disclosure is necessary, but I’ve known David for a couple of years since we were in the Orange County Podcasters together.

I won’t say much about the widget, but to say watch the video. Only good on a Mac, but a fun adaptation of Seesmic. Nice job David, what else do you have?

To be fair: The menu seems to be working much better

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

In and earlier post I had talked about how the menu broke often for me. Well, now it is time to report that I haven’t had any trouble for days with the menu, and not only it, it is updating automatically

Now, this could be a couple of things. I have installed the SDK for Flex as I’m learning it now, and in there you get a debug version of Flash 9, and perhaps this updated version simply works better. And I am of course on Linux, which can be nutty to deal with, especially on new software like Flex.

So yeah! It is updating automatically, as I am sitting here, I see new videos dropping in that were posted, ‘just now.’ This is a totally new thing for me, and I like it, so forgive me if this has been happening for you the whole time.

Great job Johann, on the whole, things are looking much better.

The French Funny Guys

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

Just came across this post by Marcel de Ruiter. It’s not a profound post, but sure struck a chord with me. 1. The shows that are put together for Loic.tv (Seesmic Day xx: topic) are endlessly entertaining. And 2. they provide key insights into how to start a company. It’s like when my kids play games that teach them about math. They are having so much fun, they forget they are learning things. We are having so much fun being entertained by Vinvin and Loic, that we aren’t realizing that they are putting into practice the idea of a company being transparent, built in the open.

I was going to write which rule this applies to in Loic’s recent “10 rules to launch a startup today” but pretty much every rule applies to what I’m describing here. So Seesmic is, in a way, a running example of the things Loic believes in.

He’s having fun, we’re having fun, but if we take a step back, there are lots of lessons to be learned here.

Re: Can’t play some videos?

Thanks to Christine for your followup! I’m posting your video below.

UPDATE: I follow up your followup: the best bit is at the end when my Firefox crashes on video

Can’t play some videos

can’t play some videos
[Click on the picture to see it full size]

Here is what is happening. You see the videos in the menu, some have a thumbnail of the video next to them, and the others just have an icon with a webcam, and what appears to be a red circle with a white line in it, traditionally meaning stop, or error. The videos with the thumbnail play, the ones with the stop icon, won’t play. This just started happening. You will also notice that the selected video has not loaded, otherwise the progress bar would be gray showing how far it has loaded in the browser.

It is also happening in the public timeline. Not as much as in the shows. It is not YouTube videos. Maybe it is uploaded .flv files. Ahhh, that’s obvious now, and has to be it.

UPDATE: Also embedding the Seesmic I did on the subject:

And a video that won’t play for me, does the below video play for you?

Great Twitter video

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

I was laughing the entire time. And I’m sure most of you have seen it already, so I wasn’t going to blog it, but then I found this video commentary by Whit Scott, the cameraman in the video, and the video editor for the videos.

He is asking some important questions about what you are looking for in the video and he is looking for your feedback. So don’t comment here, go to his blog and comment.

He is doing a heck of a job by the way, kudos to Whit!

Here is the video in the off chance you have not seen it yet.

A Seesmic Wiki

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Seesmic User (Seesmicer?) Fred2baro has put together a wiki for Seesmic. You can find it at seesmicline.pbwiki.com.

It is a fun page with some fun information. There are links that attempt to follow some of the threads of some more popular discussions. A daunting task indeed to do manually. So Fred needs all the help he can get!

Check it out! seesmicline.pbwiki.com

Received my Adobe Flex books and CD

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

I blogged earlier on this blog about my interest in Adobe Flex, because I had started to look into it as a result of Seesmic using Flex. To my surprise, Mike Potter left a comment offering me the tools to get started with Adobe Flex.

Well, I’m happy to report that I received them today. What came is O’Reilly’s Essential ActionScript 3.0 (Essential), O’Reilly’s Programming Flex 2, and a DVD from Total Training Adobe Flex 2. I just wanted to publicly thank Mike and Adobe for their kindness. I’m looking forward to digging in and learning Flex. From a programmers point of view, once you learn programming, any new language is mostly learning the syntax and the tools. So I’m pretty sure it will come quickly, I hope to be busting stuff out in no time.
