Rights management discussion

Monday, December 10th, 2007

I was on Seesmic earlier this evening, and fred2boro and I got into a discussion about rights on Seesmic. So allow me to summarize our brief conversation.

Right now, every video is assumed published, and can be redistributed (hence the embed link). Fair use? Not necessarily, but you are putting your stuff out there for all to see.

We need more rights management. And so does Seesmic.

(from here on out is my commentary, and not necessarily the opinions of fred2boro)

huh? We need more rights management. And so does Seesmic? I’m making a blanket statement for the web. Just like Flickr allows you to make a picture as public, friends, or family. That’s a start. Not many social networks provide this, but they should. And I think Seesmic is a prime place to provide this.

So this is what I think. Seesmic needs a flickr type system as I described above. Additionally, I would also like to see a way to send a personal message to someone. Effectively an email sent but with your video. So that is one level. One on one. Next, family. Clearly this all goes way past follow, which is also valuable, in fact, a different system all together. So family, I can mark people as family, and I can allow only family to see it. Same with friends. But I can also make things public, and that would be exactly how things are right now.

Your thoughts? Comments? You see things differently? You think I’m a nut? I would love to hear about it.

A Seesmic Wiki

Seesmic User (Seesmicer?) Fred2baro has put together a wiki for Seesmic. You can find it at seesmicline.pbwiki.com.

It is a fun page with some fun information. There are links that attempt to follow some of the threads of some more popular discussions. A daunting task indeed to do manually. So Fred needs all the help he can get!

Check it out! seesmicline.pbwiki.com
